Becoming Nothing 1985-2015, works by Gerard Rinaldi

October 1 - November 13, 2021

A posthumous tribute to artist Gerard Rinaldi. The opening reception will be held on Friday, October 1 from 4-8pm in participation with the Montpelier Art Walk. Curated by nephew Rob Rinaldi and Gallery Director Susan Calza, the exhibition showcases selected works from the estate of conceptual artist and provocateur Gerard. W. Rinaldi. The exhibition includes photography, video and mixed media, and offers an overview of Rinaldi’s fascination with death, the meaning of life and entropy, viewed through humor and insight.

Gerard embraced the works of Samuel Beckett, Donald Judd, Sol LeWitt, Duchamp, Rauschenberg, Nam-June Paik, John Cage and many other authors and artists. His desire to inspire curiosity was always on display, whether it was showing his students Waiting for Godot or Apocalypse Now, he would search to find new and innovative ways of connecting with students to share art, culture, music, film and literature.

Explains Curator Rob Rinaldi  “My uncle was an enigma. A man always searching for greater understanding and connection and yet, not quite fully connected. In this small retrospective of his art-life, I have tried to combine a few conceptual pieces from the late 1970s along with some of the “Re-Do’s” from the 2000s when Gerard went back to look at his own work from the late 1970s and early 80s. The big conceptual art projects from the 1970s and 80s are well documented, filed and, honestly, overwhelming. This retrospective is just a small slice. “
